OUR HISTORY:
In September 1919, a few Baptist began meeting in a Methodist Church building in Romney, WV. The number of Baptists grew and began having regular church services. The Methodist Church building was purchased in February 1920. The First Baptist Church of Romney was officially organized with 13 charter members on Wednesday, April 7, 1920.
In 1955, the present educational building was build to provide Sunday School rooms and a fellowship hall. Work on the current sanctuary and fellowship hall was begun in 1981 and the work was completed in 1983. The old church was torn down.
The congregation currently includes members and attendees from Hampshire, Mineral, and Hardy counties. We have several families that have been members for many years, and we are always looking to invite new believers to share iwth us in what God is doing in and through us as a church.
First Baptist Church of Romney is a member of the Eastern Association of Churches of the West Virginia Baptist Convention.

Scott Whetzel
Pastor
Scott is a Hampshire County native and a 1975 graduate of Hampshire High School. He is also a graduate of West Virginia University (1980) and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (2000). He is married to Melanie, and they have an adult married son and two grandchildren.
Scott has served as pastor at First Baptist Church of Romney since December 2023. He previously served as pastor at two other West Virginia Baptist Convention Churches, as well as serving on the staff of the West Virginia Baptist Convention in the area of Discipleship. He began his full time ministry as a Youth and Christian Education Director in March 2000.
In addition to his ministry, Scott enjoys outdoor activities.
